Nails for Dabbing
If you’re going to take dabs, you’ll need a nail. A nail is basically the flat surface used to heat concentrates for dabbing. Nails come in a variety of forms made from several different materials. Here’s your first tip. Stay away from cheap materials like Teflon that could be toxic. Stick to safe materials for dab nails such as
- Titanium nails
- Borosilicate glass nails
- Quartz nails
- Ceramic nails
A quality nail can make or break your overall dab experience. Most people say that concentrates taste best from quartz nails. Titanium and ceramic nails, although nice, have a reputation for altering the taste of concentrate vapor.
If you’re using a new ceramic or titanium nail, you’ll first want to season the nail. Essentially, that just means torching off any unwanted materials from the nail, making it crisp and clean for dabs.
Overall, our vote goes to quartz hands down. Other common material can work for some, but if you want a long lasting quality piece of hardware for dabbing, quartz is something you can count on. You can learn more about seasoning new nails in our other articles linked here.
Quartz Bangers for Dabbing
A banger is a specialized nail made for modifying a bong or attaching to a dab rig. If you’re into concentrates than it’s definitely one of the top dab accessories you’ll need to take rips like a pro.
You can find bangers made from all kinds of materials, but trust me, what you want is a quartz banger. I mean, borosilicate glass is okay, but it just doesn’t have the same properties of quartz that makes it perfect for dab concentrates.
There are few properties of quartz that make it the perfect material for dabbing. But why not just use a normal nail to dab? When you heat the nail with the torch, depending on the rig, if the nail is too close to the rig you could be risking damage or breaking of your whole piece. That’s why the quartz banger was invented in the first place, family.
- retains heat longer than other dab materials
- strong and has a long lifespan
- easy to clean
- provides a cleaner tasting vapor
The quartz nail has evolved over the past decade or so culminating in the common banger design we commonly see today. Quartz bangers come in a variety of forms such as with male or female stems and domed or domeless. But if you’re going to make the best of your quartz banger you’ll need some dab tools and accessories.
It’s a trip watching people who are new to dabbing react when the torch comes. A butane torch is used to heat the nail that concentrates are to be placed on. In order for the concentrates to vaporize properly, the nail has to be at just the right temperature.
Dab Tip #2
Take dabs when the nail is at lower temperatures. Low-temp dabs preserve precious concentrates, provide a cleaner vapor, and is an overall better dabbing habit.
Most torches are pretty straightforward, but if you’re willing to invest in a quality flamethrower you can find some pretty awesome features for what is essentially a lighter. Be sure to look for features such as an adjustable flame rate, ergonomic grips, and safety locks.
Dab Tools & Carb Caps
Assuming you’ve got a rig, a nice quartz banger or nail, and a torch, it’s safe to say that you’re almost there. You only need a few more essentials to officially be ready to dab your face off.
Dab Tip #3
Dabbing your face off from time to time is fun, but we don’t condone over consumption at Dabdayz. Just remember to keep a direct and balanced approach to concentrate consumption. You can check out more about the health effects of concentrates in our D.A.B Health section.
Dab tools are an essential part of your dab rig setup and it’s going to be pretty hard to get blazing without them. Really, the only tool you’ll need to get started is the quintessential dabber.
A dabber, also known as a dab stick or dab wand, is a little tool that lets you collect and place concentrates onto a dab nail for vaping. Sometimes they have a carb cap decoratively attached, giving it two functions in one.
Having a dual-sided dab tool is a clever way to reduce the number of pieces needed to be involved in your dab sessions. Consider matching your carb capsize to your nail or rig size. Dab tools are made from your typical materials for dabbing such as titanium and quartz.
More advanced dab tools include pieces specialized for particular purposes, such as a spoon or paddle, which is used for serving up large doses of more oily and fluid concentrates. Needle and ballpoint dab tools are better suited for serving harder concentrates such as shatter or wax.
Having a precise instrument for breaking up shatter and wax is essential. You don’t want your expensive concentrate going flying into a million pieces and on the floor, would you? Ballpoint tools are perfect for crunching wax into more manageable pieces.
Keep your dab tools clean. Concentrates are sticky and once you’ve gotten concentrate on your tools, they can easily get dirty from contaminants. Use a clean wipe, cloth, or Q-tip to keep your tools clean after each session to avoid mixing unwanted debris in with your pricey concentrates.
Must-Have Dab Accessories
Now that you’ve got the basics covered, it’s time to move on the must-have accessories for every dab rig owner. It’s one thing to take dabs here and there, but if you’re investing in a quality dab rag, you’re going to want to keep it safe and protected.
You’re also going to want to keep your concentrates stored in an easy to manage way. Here are some of the best dab accessories to add to your rig that can help take your daily session to the next level.
A dome may or may not be needed to modify your dab rig. If you have an exposed nail or banger, you risk losing tasty vapor in the air before it can get sucked into the chamber. A dome collects sublimated vapor, keeping it from escaping. That means you won’t be losing precious concentrate in the air.
Some nails come equipped with a dome, referred to as domed nails, but do not. Even when using a honey pot or a typical quartz banger it can be a great idea to modify it with a great dome, or hood.
Once you’ve been dabbing for only a little while, you’ll soon realize that it’s easy to waste concentrates. Often you might be sloppy putting the concentrate on the nail, or you might be a little too ambitious and put a big glob. This often results in costly concentrates dripping down the nail into the joint and dab rig.
An oil reclaimer is the answer to this problem. It’s a modifier for your setup that uses a glass jar to collect excess concentrate that would otherwise be lost. An oil reclaimer is a great way to save your sticky concentrates from being wasted. It’s also a great way to keep your dab rig cleaner than most.
Silicon Concentrate Containers
Pretty much the staple of any dab rig is the silicone dab dish. Silicone is great for using with concentrates for many reasons, especially when it comes to the dab dish.
The dab dish is the container that you use to store your concentrates. Harder consistency concentrates use containers like wax wallets for storing less malleable extracts.
Silicone is the perfect material for dab tools and accessories for several key properties including,
- easy to clean
- insulating, and keeps concentrates at the perfect temperature
- easily portable and safe
Other dab tools and accessories can also be made with silicone, making them super easy to clean and travel with. Check out our favorite silicone dab accessories linked here

So, you’ve got your dabber and a silicone dab dish filled with some gooey concentrates. You’ve got your torch and an awesome hooded quartz banger fitted with an oil reclaimer. Now you’ll just need something to store your valuable pieces in.
A safe case is the best option. A specialty made container where you can keep your dabber, dab dish, vape pens, concentrates, and other tiny items integral to a great dabbing session. A great safe case looks nice, has easy storage pockets, and comes with a secured zipper. It’s the perfect way to keep all your accessories in one, safe and portable place.
Silicone Dab Mat
Imagine that you’ve dropped some serious bank on a dope dab rig. You’ve got the best concentrates around. You’ve got your torch and you’re blazing up the nail. Somewhere in between the torch and putting the concentrate on the nail though, something goes wrong and your rig slips and falls.
When you’re working with concentrates, torches, and fragile materials it’s easy for accidents like that to happen. That’s why the dab mat was invented. It’s the non-slip no-nonsense solution for slippery surfaces. Getting a dab mat is kind of like insurance for your dab rig. No slip, no worry.
Pipe Cleaners & 420 Wipes
Maybe one of the most underrated dab tool accessories out there, pipe cleaners and 420 wipes are essential in any dab rig safe case. Keeping your dab rig clean is the only way to preserve the chance to have a tasty and clean dab rip every session, and pipe cleaners and sanitary 420 wipes are the best way to do that.
