Heart disease rates are on the rise worldwide, despite exhaustive efforts of doctors everywhere. Much of what causes cardiovascular diseases could be prevented and doctors are desperate for new, safe drugs that could help patients with their heart problems.
Now, you might think it’s a bit of a stretch for us to say that dabbing cannabis concentrates could be beneficial for heart disease, but hold on. Keep reading. We’ve got a lot of ground to cover. Heart disease is a big issue and cannabis concentrates are misunderstand, especially CBD.
What is CBD?
CBD, or cannabidiol, is a molecular compound extracted from the plant cannabis sativa, or just cannabis. You might know this plant as marijuana, or hemp. These two names simply refer to two “types” of the cannabis plant.
The compound is synthesized mainly in the resinous flowers of the female hemp plant. Some types of cannabis produce more CBD than other cannabinoid compounds, such as THC. This is referred to as high-CBD hemp, and it’s what every great CBD oil manufacturer and hemp breeder or farmer works with.
CBD is non-toxic, meaning you can’t overdose and has no unwanted side effects associated with THC, marijuana or getting high. However, it can still exhibit a calming, uplifting effect.

Even short-lived anxiety and stress can take its toll on the heart. But the reality is that most of us dealing with chronic, daily anxiety and stress. The National Institute of Mental Health estimates that about 40 million adults are suffering from some type of anxiety disorder.
Their reports also show that 75% of those with anxiety problems won’t receive treatment, likely leading to a serious long-term impact on heart health. Cardiovascular disease kills more lives every year than ALL FORMS of cancer and chronic lower respiratory diseases combined, According to the American Heart Association.
In the United States, it’’s expected to rise to 41.4%, or 90 million people.
That’s an alarming figure to consider when 77% of first time strokes are related to high blood pressure.
An ischemic stroke happens when a blood vessel that feeds the brain gets blocked, typically due to a blood clot. A blood clot affecting blood flow to the brain can result in brain damage and the loss of abilities in functions such as walking or talking. If too many brain cells in a particular region die from lack of oxygen-rich blood, the brain damage could become permanent.

- Someone in the US has a stroke about once every 40 seconds.
- Stroke accounts for 1 of every 19 deaths in the US.
- Stroke kills someone in the US about every 3 minutes 45 seconds.
- When considered separately from other cardiovascular diseases, stroke ranks No. 5 among all causes of death in the US, killing nearly 133,000 people a year.
- From 2005 to 2015, the age-adjusted stroke death rate decreased 21.7 percent, and the actual number of stroke deaths declined 2.3 percent.
- Each year, about 795,000 people experience a new or recurrent stroke. Approximately 610,000 of these are first attacks, and 185,000 are recurrent attacks.
- Stroke is a leading cause of serious long-term disability in the US.
- In 2015, stroke deaths accounted for 11.8% of total deaths worldwide, making stroke the second leading global cause of death behind heart disease.

- Heart Disease (including Coronary Heart Disease, Hypertension, and Stroke) remains the No.1 cause of death in the US.
- Coronary heart disease accounts for 1 in 7 deaths in the US, killing over 366,800 people a year.
- The overall prevalence for MI in the US is about 7.9 million, or 3 percent, in US adults.
- In 2015, heart attacks claimed 114,023 lives in the US
- The estimated annual incidence of heart attack in the US is 720,000 new attacks and 335,000 recurrent attacks.
- Average age at the first heart attack is 65.6 years for males and 72 years for females.

- Cardiovascular disease, listed as the underlying cause of death, accounts for nearly 836,546 deaths in the US. That’s about 1 of every 3 deaths in the US.
- About 2,300 Americans die of cardiovascular disease each day, an average of 1 death every 38 seconds.
- Cardiovascular diseases claim more lives each year than all forms of cancer and Chronic Lower Respiratory Disease combined.
- Heart disease accounts for 1 in 7 deaths in the US.
Could CBD Extracts Help Heart Health?
Could a CBD dab stop a heart attack? Well, I can’t answer that, but there is a growing body of scientific evidence in support of cannabidiol in the management of heart disease variables. Multiple studies in humans and animals suggest that CBD extracts have an incredible therapeutic benefit in treating the leading conditions associated with cardiovascular disease.
Many people are still chomping down Advil and ibuprofen, also known as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, to manage heart pain or other conditions. Before you keep doing that or reject CBD, consider that NSAIDs have been shown to increase the risk of heart failure by 19%.
CBD & Anxiety Studies
CBD concentrates have been shown to reduce stress-related anxiety in multiple studies in humans and animals. It’s even been considered as a potential new drug candidate for PTSD, depression, and other types of mental health conditions.
Scientists have been studying CBD since the 1980’s, but I guess not too many have really been paying attention until recently. Researchers out of Brazil discovered that CBD extracts from cannabis were having an anxiolytic and anti-depressant effect on their mice.
They were able to identify that CBD was able to bind with a very unique biochemical receptor, 5-HT1A. This is the same target receptor used in most of today’s leading antipsychotic, anxiety, and depression medications. In short, the receptor is essentially like a signaling hub for emotional balance, and CBD instructs it to “relax”.
While CBD may not be able to reduce the stress of daily life, it could relax your stress-response, lowering anxiety. Remember, you don’t have to smoke and damage your lungs, or even get high. Compared to the long-term effect of taking a CBD oil supplement, vaporizing CBD extracts can have an instantaneous effect on stress, anxiety, and emotional stability. Now, let’s move on to more science surrounding this compound and its benefits for heart health.
Can CBD Reduce High Blood Pressure
Numerous studies have shown that cannabidiol extracts can reduce low blood pressure. A study published by The American Society for Clinical Investigation revealed that a single dose of cannabidiol reduces blood pressure in healthy volunteers. 
The study was done using 9 healthy males volunteers who were given 600 mg of CBD or placebo in a randomized double-blind, crossover study. The researchers measured cardiovascular parameters including resting BP, stroke volume, heart rate increase, and maintained cardiac output during stress tests.
Their conclusions from the experiment suggest that acute administration of CBD reduces resting blood pressure and the hike in blood pressure from stress-related anxiety.
In one important 2006 study published in Autoimmunity, researchers reported that CBD treatment significantly reduces the incidence of diabetes in NOD mice from incidence of 86% in non-treated control mice to 30% incidence in CBD-treated mice. In other words, CBD treatment reduced the development of diabetes by 56%.
Experts think that CBD works to normalize hypertension by blocking hydrolysis of the endocannabinoid anandamide in CB-1 receptors. The findings of these studies are supported by previous data on the effects of a synthetic cannabinoid on sympathetic cardiovascular regulation.
CBD’s Effects on Diabetes & Obesity
Obesity comes with many complications and additional health risks. The results from experiments show that CBD can reduce food intake by suppressing appetite, which is said to be in line with existing reports.
Cannabidiol may be beneficial for those struggling with overeating disorders or emotional binge eating because of its appetite suppressing and mood stabilizing effects.
Studies on adult male rats indicate that CBD may have the ability to suppress appetite. A team of pharmacological and psychological researchers from the U.K. researched the effects of various phytocannabinoids upon feeding behaviors. 
It’s clear that CBD’s effects on obesity can have a substantial impact on the way we eat, when we eat, and how much we eat. But there needs to more research and continued investigation into the mechanisms by which CBD effects eating and appetite in order to develop new and effective medicines in treating obesity.
Overall, cannabidiol extract’s potential to lower high blood pressure, suppress appetite, and reduce the risk of Type II diabetes is extremely beneficial for obesity patients.
How Cannabidiol Concentrates Protect Your Heart In An Attack & Stroke
Multiple studies have proved that CBD reduces blood pressure. CBD is a vasodilator, meaning it helps blood vessel expand, increasing blood flow and normalizing blood pressure. The extract may even be able to help prevent and protect from the risks of heart attack and stroke.
Scientists investigating the properties of CBD have discovered that it could help prevent heart attack and stroke in those at risk and possibly even protect the heart during ischemia.  A team of U.K. researchers investigating CBD’s effects in an in vivo rat model of coronary artery occlusion found it to be anti-arrhythmic and tissue sparing.
However, researchers haven’t determined exactly how CBD’s antiarrhythmic effects work. CBD was only able to control arrhythmia during the experimental coronary artery occlusion if a CB1 antagonist was administered first. CB1 is a specialized receptor cell of the endocannabinoid system that binds with cannabinoids.
In this case, the CB1 antagonist was a compound called AM251. In nature, the analogous CB1 antagonist is the compound THC that is also synthesized in the cannabis plant. Further research is necessary to confirm the receptor pathways responsible for CBD’s antiarrhythmic effects, but it would seem as if a combination of CBD and THC might be more effective than CBD alone.
Another 2004 study published in the journal, Circulation, confirmed that CBD helps the body increase concentrations of the endocannabinoid anandamide.
Increased concentrations of anandamide in the bloodstream also act upon CB1 receptors similar to THC. This receptor’s activity is able to attenuate a number of cardiovascular variables such as hypertension, arrhythmia, and tissue damage in ischemia. The researchers summarize their study.
“We conclude that endocannabinoids tonically suppress cardiac contractility in hypertension and that enhancing the CB1-mediated cardio-depressor and vasodilator effects of endogenous anandamide by blocking its hydrolysis can normalize blood pressure. Targeting the endocannabinoid system offers novel therapeutic strategies in the treatment of hypertension.”
A 2007 study published in the American Journal of Physiology validated the findings of previous studies investigating CBD’s cardio-protective effects in ischemia. They found that CBD reduced infarct, or heart tissue damage, in an in vivo rat model of myocardial ischemic reperfusion injury.
After inducing ischemia by ligating for thirty minutes the left anterior descending coronary artery, rats were treated with 5 mg per kg of CBD or control vehicle.
“Our study shows that CBD induces a substantial in vivo cardio-protective effect from ischemia that is not observed ex vivo. Inasmuch as CBD has previously been administered to humans without causing side effects, it may represent a promising novel treatment for myocardial ischemia.”
Is Dabbing Good For The Heart?
I’m not a doctor and I can’t say if dabbing is good for heart health or not. I can say that the science behind CBD extract, which is a cannabis concentrate, supports using the compound for heart health.
Dabbing involves inhaling vaporized cannabis extracts, in this case, something like CBD wax, budder, live rosin, or CO2 oil. Inhaling is the fastest acting method of administering CBD or cannabis dabs, and dabbing extracts is the most efficient way to take large doses.
We’re not suggesting that a hit off your CBD vape pen will save you during a heart attack, but research suggests that using CBD regularly could help protect you during a heart or stroke, reduce your high blood pressure, and relax your stress response system.
